Montreal police arson investigators will examine the damage done by a crude firebomb at the site of a Jewish community centre and synagogue early Wednesday in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.

The centre on West Park Blvd. is occupied by Congregation Beth Tikvah synagogue, the Hebrew Foundation School and the West Island offices of the Federation CJA. Police arrived around 3 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire outside the building.

Police quickly extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher and found the remnants of a crude firebomb. A window was smashed and there was minor damage to the building because of smoke.

Montreal police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc said witnesses reported a suspect at the site before the arrival of police. No injuries were reported, and investigators will examine local surveillance cameras in an effort to determine the circumstances leading to the fire.

The synagogue was the target of a firebomb in November 2023.
